R40
The R40 series bikes could all be had with either above seat steering (ASS), or under seat steering (USS). Also either short wheelbase (SWB) or long wheelbase (LWB). Later on, ATP shortened the LWB boom and called the result a medium wheelbase (MWB). The R40 and R42 used 2" wide frame tubing, while the R44 and R45 used thinner 1.75" main tubes. The R 42 and R45 included upgraded components. All of these bikes could be had with either a 16 or 20 inch front wheel.

ATP also made rear-suspension versions of the R40 series bikes which were designated as "40s", "42s", "44s", and "45s", the "s" designating rear suspension.

ATP "Vision" Test
Editor's Choice for Best Recumbent of 1994!

8 page excerpt from RCN #21 - Spring 1994.

Here's a LWB R40 that has been converted to SWB, maintaining the original LWB boom.

Doug Smart writes (June 3, 2018): Here's my R-40, found in a thrift shop about three years ago. It was my first experience with a recumbent - a bike I didn't know I had always wanted. From the outfitting my best guess is that it is a 2002 model. It appeared to have all factory original equipment including tires with the Vision imprint. They weren't worn out but were weather checked with age - I replaced them with Schwalbe Marathons. I removed the toe clips, replaced the cables, sheaths, grips, brake pads, and chain. Here are some of my customizations.

David Hutchinson was serving aboard the USCGC icebreaker Healy as a Marine Science Technician. On Dec. 25, 2017 he and several other crew members pulled out their bikes at the pole for photos. He says "Actually there were two ships up there at the same time. The other on was out of the picture. It was the German icebreaker Polarstern."

Just one of the MANY ways people have modified the steering bars on their USS Visions. Vision R-40 Modified with HP Velotechnik Streetmachine handlebars.

Irv Jamison's blue R40, image files bear the date 8/28/16. Irv comments: Here are some photos of the first blue R40 that I did. The seat mesh was the first of two that I did.

Irv Jamison's orange R40 hard tail with plastic seat. These image files are all dated 6/16/13. Note...I did post a cropped lower res version of one of these photos April 12, along with this caption: Irv Jamison writes (Oct 1, 2014)... On all of the R-40 series models that I have bought, rebuilt and sold, I have increased the fork offset to makeup for the shorter wheelbase. Here is one of my finished R-40s. The seat is a FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) and was used, as I wanted to try a hard shell seat on the Vision and I have a stack of them. I felt that the seat allowed more power to reach the pedals and provided better upper body support. The original Vision seat is a little weak in strength at the back of the seat. I have repaired dozens of Vision seats due to breakage of the top seat tubes. Im currently looking into manufacturing an updated Vision style seat as I feel the mesh seats that are available are way too expensive. The comfort level with the seat pad was close to the stock Vision seat. Did not compare weight difference but was not much. With the mounts that were made, the FRP seat allowed for more adjustment than the stock seat but was not really needed. http://www.recumbentriders.org/forums/threads/15294/
